Gallery on Sturt - Art in the heart of Ballarat

Ballarat International Foto Biennale 2011
20th August - 18th September 2011

Gallery on Sturt again exhibited another exciting range of photographic works during the 2011 Ballarat International Foto Biennale (BIFB.)
The program was held from 20th August - 18th Sept 2011 and presented a wide range of photographic events over multiple venues throughout Ballarat and the adjoining Hepburn Shire.
Gallery on Sturt was proud to have a very talented line up of exhibiting photographers including ERIC ALGRA, NEIL CASH, THOMAS DELFATTI, PATRICIA GABB, TEAGAN GLENANE and SIMON PETERSWALD.

TEAGAN GLENANE is a 23 year old graduate of Photography Studies College and currently employed as Fairfax Cadet Photographer. Teagan is Ballarat born and bred and now
lives in Melbourne. Her exhibition for this years foto biennale is a photographic documentary of her voluntary work with the Children's First Foundation.
This documents the story of a young Tanzanian child 'Issa' who had surgery for a deformed club foot at the Royal Children's Hospital, Melbourne and return to his family and life in Tanzania.

ERIC ALGRA is a Melbourne-based photographer with a long-standing fascination with the Ned Kelly legend. He went to Kelly Country intending to capture
a sense of place, but found himself also confronted by many effigies of the Kelly Gang and their armour. This is not too surprising; the bold and
iconic imagery, a symbol of rebellion to many, is a major factor in the lasting mystique of the Kelly story.

NEIL CASH's exhibition focuses on 'The Shape of Music.' This is an exploration of the visual aesthetics of music. Photography, geometry, music and time
are all given equal importance in each piece. With so much beauty to explore throughout the widely varied history of music, this exhibition draws on
the old and the new, finding both balance and contrast through nostalgia and modern invention. The use of shape, text, numerals and symbols emphasize
the rhythm of each individual piece. Whether your love of music and art is classical or contemporary, this show is very appealing and should not be missed.

PATRICIA GABB: 'Polar Bears of Hudson Bay.' This exhibition celebrates the giants of the Arctic whose survival is threatened by our changing climate. Come and share their beauty, power,
fragility and playfulness as you learn their story. Less ice, less food, fewer babies --WHAT FUTURE ??? Pat travelled to Churchill, Hudson Bay, Canada in 2009 to participate in a
photography workshop for 4 days on the tundra, travelling securely ensconced in a Tundra Buggy and photographing from a height of 4 metres (out of bear reach!!!.)
It was truly an INSPIRING and HUMBLING experience.

SIMON PETERSWALD is an amateur with over 35 years experience. He was recently awarded silver and bronze medals in the Canon Creative Asia & Epson International Pano Competitions for 2011.
Title: CHROME 'I grew up in an era when chrome was an integral part of the design and appearance of a car. The exhibition is a celebration of how much artistic flair the material enhanced
a very functional object. Covering decades from the 20’s through to the 60’s demonstrating “art” from different cultures. The different way it has been used as a means of expression.
This exhibition is a visual reminder for those that have memories of a time gone by or those that appreciate great design.

THOMAS DELFATTI “South of the Arkos” Images for this exhibition have been carefully selected from over 2000 images as seen through the eyes of an Antarctic expeditioner who spent two years
living on remote stations in the Antarctic. They highlight the extraordinary beautiful and bleak landscapes of ice, ocean and rock under extreme weather conditions, together with the
unique wildlife of the area. The name for this exhibition originates from the Greek word ‘Arkos’, the ‘bear’ constellation, which can only be seen in the Northern Hemisphere.
Greek writers more than 2000 years ago described Antarctica, ‘Anti-Arkitos’ - the polar landmass lying to the south of the Arctic.
